The following components resulted in stable system. It runs apps OK at 400, 412 and 448 Mhz. Initially setup and OS installed at 266 MHz. Ofice 97 was installed at 400 MHz. Benchmarks will be posted soon.
Case: Acer HX-45 with second fan
Motherboard: ASUS P2B, BIOS ver 1002
CPU:retail Boxed Celeron, factory heatsink
CD: Hitachi CDR-8330
HDD: WD32200, 3.3GB UDMA
NIC: Kingston KN40BT
Sound: Creative SB PCI64
Video: ATI Xpert@Play, 8MB SGRAM
Mouse: PS-2
OS: WIN 98
Memory: 128 MB, consisting of 2 64 MB DIMMS.
DIMM "A" cost $79 at a local dealer, it is "generic", no brand, and uses Misubishi components with a -10 suffix. Although the DIMM has a "PC-100" label on it, it is not to spec as tAC is 8. It runs OK by itself at 400, 412 and 448 MHz.
DIMM "B" cost $92 at a computer show in Richmond on 7-25-98, purchased from Shenandoah. It uses LGS -7j components and meets PC-100 criteria in that tAC is 6 and tCLK is 10. It is generic, ie, assembly fabricator is unknown. It works fine at any speed. It runs OK at 400, 412 and 448.
Currently BOTH DIMMS are installed and running fine at 400, which is where I intend to leave the system.
The ACER case is made quite well, has a 235 Watt power supply, blows air out the back, and cost $69 at the show. I just purchased a PC Cooling and Power Systems case with the TurboCool 300 Watt ATX 2.01 power supply. With freight, it was nearly $200, but it is VERY nice and side panels come off individually, whereas the ACER case requires removal of the entire shell. For $60 less you can get their "Standard" ATX 2.01 power supply rated at 235 Watts.
