YAMAHA XG MIDI Player with Software Synth After assembling my new system based on Celeron 300a, it happened that the best combination with it was my old Sound Blaster Pro that came with my 486 fives yrs ago. I am not crazy ! Read on and you will know why. You can choose the TEMPO of the MIDI song and put them into a playlist. I stumbled upon the Yamaha Software Synthesizer software while I was searching for some MIDI files to test out the quality of my sound card (I have another Yamaha 16 bit w/software synth sound card on my another BH6). So, I played the MIDI file and it sounds yucks, terribly bad. I saw this MIDPLUG for XG at Yamha Site, I thought it was a joke, how could you turn your legacy sound card into a good MIDI machine? (Actually I saw this software half a yr ago and did not download it as it's huge ~ 5Mb) This time round, I would just like to try it out on my cruching machine of CELERON 300a overclocked to 450Mhz with 32Mb SDRAM. I downloaded it and installed it. Installation was a breeze. After installation, the Yamaha SXG50 driver is installed on the multimedia icon of the control panel. Simply choose this as the output device. If you were to double click the XG Synth Driver in your control panel, you will be asked to configure on how many PolyPhony, the Sampling rate of the samples, whether to use Direct Sound etc. I choose the max settings for all since I want to test the cruching machine. (The test hung my Pentium 75 at office).. :-) I am now listening to the sample MIDI from Yamaha. They never sound so good on a Sound Blaster Pro/16. Do give it a try and install it, the sound quality is really quite impressive for a old sound card. You can download it from http://www.cyber-bp.or.jp/yamaha/midplug/index_e.html A Solid site with XG MIDI files to test out http://www-personal.umich.edu/~sgoi/files.html For some great Mandarin and Cantonese MIDI files, you can also visit http://web.singnet.com.sg/~robinng
